New
Hospital Frio Regional Hospital, a replacement
hospital, was opened September 6, 2000. The 42,000 square foot building
replaced an obsolete 15,000 square foot building. Frio Regional Hospital
has 22 private patient rooms and basic primary care services, including
emergency room, obstetrical, general surgery, clinical laboratory and
radiology.
The
service area for Frio Regional Hospital is 25,000-30,000 population,
mostly located 30 miles north and south on IH-35. These communities
generally are Devine, Pearsall, Dilley and Cotulla and individuals that
live in Frio, La Salle and Medina Counties.
Pearsall is 60 miles southwest of
San Antonio, Texas on IH35 South. Take exit 101 for the hospital.
Emergency
Room Emergency room physicians are on duty 24 hours a
day and are provided by an independent contractor. The
facility is certified as a Level IV trauma center. Serious trauma is
stabilized and transferred, usually by helicopter, to one of three Level I
trauma centers in San Antonio.
Frio Hospital
Home Health The hospital owns and operates a Department
of Home Health, which provides nursing services and physical therapy
services in the home to those that qualify under Medicare and Medicaid
regulations. Private patients and patients covered by insurance may also
access these services. That department is located next to the hospital in
a separate building at (830) 334-2058.
Frio
Rehabilitation Center The hospital also owns and
operates by contract an outpatient rehabilitation center that provides
physical, occupational and speech therapy. They may be reached at (830)
334-4152. Staffing and management is provided by Warm Springs
Rehabilitation System.
Charity Care
Program An indigent caseworker is employed
jointly by three entities that conduct charity care programs. The Frio
Hospital District, the Frio Hospital Association and the Frio County
Indigent Care Program can all be accessed through the hospital's
caseworker, whose office is near the lobby. In addition, a state employee
of the Department of Health and Human Services is based at the hospital to
provide easy access to patients applying for the Medicaid program.
Frio Business
Park When land was purchased for the new hospital,
a total of 112 acres was purchased located on IH-35 near the intersection
of FM140. A grant was obtained from the Economic Development
Administration, which allowed the hospital to develop the property into a business
park with full infrastructure. It is the hospitals mission to use this
facility to provide economic development opportunities for the Pearsall area.

Specialists Once a month a directory of visiting
specialty physicians is published in the local Pearsall newspaper, the
Frio-Nueces Current. Currently, specialist physicians include
cardiologist, neurologist, orthopedic surgeon, podiatrist, ENT, family
therapist, OB/GYN, ophthalmology, psychiatry and urology.
