Facility to provide community with better options for rehab after hospitalization

PEARSALL, TEXAS…May 7, 2020--Frio Regional Hospital now offers a new in-hospital rehabilitation gym providing the community with an even better option for rehab after hospitalization.

"We know how important it is to get back on your feet as quickly as possible after an illness, injury or surgery," said John Hughson, CEO at Frio Regional Hospital. "When area residents need nursing and rehabilitation care after a stay in an acute hospital, they now can choose to have that care in a hospital setting at Frio Regional."

"Also, if an individual is living with a health problem that makes it difficult to function independently, Frio Regional can help," he continued. "Our team of highly skilled rehab specialists is trained to help patients get back to living a full life by providing the highest quality care close to home."

The new gym will offer services that have been provided in Frio Regional's outpatient facility, including physical, occupational and speech therapy for adult and pediatric patients. Some of the services or modalities include ultrasound, electrical stimulation and manual/digital therapy.

With the new in-hospital rehabilitation gym, the hospital will implement a swing bed program to assist patients who have undergone surgery, an illness or injury, with continued skilled care so they are discharged with a higher level of functioning and wellness.

The name comes from physicians' ability to choose to "swing" their patients from one level of care to another while keeping them in the same facility, making the treatment easier for patients and their families. Patients may stay in a swing bed program as long as they are making progress—for as little as three days or as many as 21 days.

Patients may benefit with the Swing Bed program when they need to heal and regain strength after being hospitalized or undergoing surgery, wound care, IV therapy or stroke rehabilitation.

Other features of the program include registered nurses on staff 24 hours, emergency room services available 24 hours, high nurse-to-patient ratio, an in-house pharmacy, and private rooms.

The Swing Bed program is often covered by private insurance plans and may be covered for Medicare Part A when certain criteria are met.
